Clean Britain Awards Inspection Criteria


The Clean Britain Awards inspection criteria are dedicated to the standards of cleanliness of external public areas and the exterior of buildings where there is general public access – such as town halls, car parks and open spaces. External areas where the public have no access will not be included in the inspection process.

Inspection criteria to be used are as follows. All criteria relate solely to standards of cleanliness - i.e. not potholes, broken slabs, missing signs etc.

  • Roadways including gutters and drains (above ground)
  • Pavements
  • Pathways and Cycle Ways
  • Steps and Escalators
  • Verges and Banks
  • Any Parks, Gardens or Public areas
  • Public Car Parks and Public Toilets
  • Signage and Street Furniture
  • Litter / Waste bins
  • Public access areas such as Bus and Train Stations and Shopping areas

All entries will be inspected and graded for:-

  • First impressions of the area entered or selected for a random inspection
  • Overall standards of cleanliness of area(s) being inspected
  • Litter and any other detritus
  • Fly tipping
  • Chewing gum deposits
  • Dog fouling deposits and waste bin provision
  • Litter / waste bin management
  • Signage and street furniture cleanliness
  • Unauthorised Graffiti
  • Overgrown and obstructing hedgerows on urban pavements and pathways

All entries will be visually inspected from a resident or visitor’s perspective with impressions gained for each criteria above noted by the Inspector.

Inspection visits will be unannounced and will last a minimum of half a day.
